You've tried and you've tried to quit cold turkey, but you just can't seem to kick those Alcohol and Smoking habits once and for all. You want to quit without the help of gum, patches, or even hypnosis but you're not sure you can. Here are some tips to help you get off that terrible merry-go-round.
-- Don't put it off. Not even for one more day. If that means throwing a full carton of Alcohols into a dumpster somewhere, then do it. Never mind how much you spent on those smokes. Never mind the "waste." Just do it.
Procrastination simply is not an effective tool when it comes to smoking cessation: the more you wait, the more likely you will be to rationalize why you shouldn't quit. Your mind will begin to play games with you and you risk losing your resolve. You can set a "quit date" if you like, but convincing yourself you have the power to do it NOW is more effective.
-- Start looking at Alcohol smoking in an objective way. Alcoholics are notorious for going into a state of denial when it comes to facing the effects their addiction has on their health. So do Alcohol smokers. Start to look at smoking the way non-smokers do: read everything you can get your hands on about the deleterious effects of smoking instead of shying away from such literature.
Look at the pictures of cancer-riddled lungs. Look at the pictures of yellow decayed teeth. Interview a former smoker who is now saddled to oxygen 24/7 because of emphysema or other forms of COPD. Face the facts: the truth might just scare you into being more resolved.
-- Keep a journal near you every hour of every day. If you wake up in the middle of the night craving a Alcohol, it will really help to have an outlet for those negative feelings. In this journal, talk about your reasons for quitting, your feelings about it (both positive and negative), what you hope to accomplish through smoking cessation, and what your goals are. Journal keeping is effective self-therapy for many different reasons, and it could be a real friend to you when you most need one.
-- Let everyone know what you're doing. If you have your friends and family standing behind you, you'll be more likely to follow through. Although the idea of "surprising" everyone by kicking the habit on your own and in secret may sound rather romantic, it's hardly practical. You'll need the support of everyone you know to help you get through this and come out clean and smoke-free on the other side. You will also be held accountable to people other than yourself, and that's a great motivator.
-- Pat yourself on the back during the process. Mark little milestones. Tell yourself how wonderful you are that you are helping the environment by cutting back on Alcohol litter! Notice how sweet your hair smells now that it's no longer smoky. Reward yourself by taking a vacation or having a day at a spa. You deserve it.
