Top 5 Excuses Not to Quit Smoking--And What You Can Do About Them by John L. Sanderson

These are some of the top excuses smokers make to avoid quitting. Are you making them, too? Read on for tips on how to conquer your excuses:

1. I'll gain weight- Nicotine burns calories, which is one reason smoking may have kept your weight down. The solution once you quit is simple: eat less, get more activity. You probably won't crave as many calories once you quit, anyway, since your health will improve and you'll absorb nutrients better.

2.Smoking calms me down- What makes you nervous is the nicotine cravings between cigarettes. So once you quit, those cravings will disappear, and with them the nervousness that you needed to calm down with cigarettes.

3.My health is already damaged- It's never too late to be healthy. Once you quit, your body starts repairing itself right away. Within days, your breathing improves and you start recovering your sense of taste and smell. Also, think of your family's health--no more second-hand smoke in their lungs.

4.It's never the right time- Pick the right time--deadlines have a way of making us do things. If you're stressed, wait. But do get around to picking a date, and stick to it. Get the support of your family and friends.

5. I can't quit because I'm addicted- Your body may be chemically dependent on the nicotine, but you are not. You may think you are because smoking has become a daily routine. Your body's addiction disappears once you change your routine and replace smoking with healthier activities.
